This should be an enjoyable stage of learning to swim. We focus on helping each child build trust in their teacher and confidence in the water. As they become ready, they work towards swimming more independently while continuing to develop their water safety knowledge.

Preschoolers learn through activities suited to their ability and confidence, including:

  • Water safety: Recognising hazards, learning safe ways to enter the pool and practising what to do if they unexpectedly enter the water.

  • Floating and movement: Learning to float, kick and move through the water, with swimming aids where helpful.

  • Breath control and submersion: Practising breathing skills and becoming comfortable putting their face or body underwater at their own pace.

  • Early swimming skills: Beginning freestyle, backstroke and lifesaving backstroke skills as they are ready.

  • Survival skills: Practising jumps and returns, and beginning to tread water.

Every child progresses at their own pace. Our aim is for them to enjoy their lessons, grow in independence and develop skills that help them be safer in and around water.

Certificate levels: Ducks, Turtles, Starfish, Sea Monkeys
